Five start-ups from all over Europe will take to the stage at Hamburg’s Gruenspan club on September 19, 2018 to pitch their business models and to win over the jury and the expert audience. A 30-strong board of trustees has selected the five finalists. The winner will receive a EUR 150,000 media budget from WELT daily and a ticket to the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. The private initiative Hamburg Startups is hosting the sixth edition of the event and had invited young, innovative companies from all over Europe to enter the contest.
The five finalists include the Hamburg-based Cargonexx, which matches cargo with free capacities on trucks using the help of algorithms in order to reduce the amount of empty trips. Coldplasmatech, based in Greifswald, has developed a medical device that provides a solution for the treatment of chronic wounds while the Munich-based Getinnotizez offers attractive career opportunities for high potentials from and in Africa. The Berlin-based Leapsome enables continuous personnel development and the scaling of an agile culture during growth and helps companies to retain and develop top executives. The Hamburg-based start-up Nautiluslog has developed an app that makes it easy to manage shipping logbooks per app.
Complex decision-making process
The board of trustees consisting of experts from investment, start-up promotion, large companies and journalism, had received a record 200 applications this year. Each member sponsored one candidate and introduced the person to the big round. Each juror received ten cash notes worth 100,000 “start-up dollars” to distribute to their favourites. The start-ups with the highest amounts reached the next round.
Applicants who did not reach the final round still have an opportunity to present their business models on Pitch Day, which takes place before the main event. A total of 16 start-ups are taking part.
