Hamburg’s First Mayor Olaf Scholz and the Hamburg Minister of Science and Research, Dr. Dorothee Stapelfeldt, inaugurated the annex of Hamburg’s media campus Finkenau today on Montag, 16 March. Designed by Gerber Architekten Hamburg, the new building houses a state-of-the art library and media centre along with laboratories for students of media technology and design at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, HAW Hamburg. Construction cost totalled nearly 24 million euro, not including the outfitting of labs and offices.
With the expansion, the Media Campus Hamburg is now fully completed. The 3,600 sq m annex not only comprises a recording studio, virtual studio, video lab, and an Interaction Design Laboratory of the Faculty DMI, but also the Library of Design, Media and Information (HIBA), and the university’s cafeteria. Main user of the new building is the HAW Hamburg with their faculty of Design, Media, Information (DMI). Other users include the Academy of Fine Arts (HFBK), the Hamburg Media School, the Miami Ad School, the Multimedia Kontor Hamburg and the local broadcaster Tide TV / Tide 96.0. The cafeteria cum canteen is run by the students. At the start of the project, an architectural competition was launched in 2009. Among the 19 architectural firms that took part in the competition, Gerber Architekten emerged as winner.
