As one of the other gaming companies, the start-up “Threaks” is part of the growing gaming industry in Hamburg. Following the distinction of “Beatbuddy” named best youth game at the German Computer Game Award in 2014, also the app now brought back laurels to the Hamburg start-up, with the iPad version voted one of the best games of the year. Meanwhile, more than 700,000 Beatbuddy games have been sold for iPads, iPhones, and PCs.
Strengthening The Hamburg Games Industry
Overall, the games industry continues to grow in Hamburg. Browser games and apps, in particular, are being developed here with huge success. So far, the sector’s 150 companies created 4,700 jobs. “The games industry is the job engine of Hamburg’s digital economy”, says Stefan Klein, managing director of the “gamecity: Hamburg”. Companies like Goodgame Studios, Bigpoint, or InnoGames are heavyweights of the ongoing success story.
Development of Beatbuddy
The adventure game Beatbuddy was designed in 2009 by Wolf Lang and four other students of the University of Applied Sciences HAW Hamburg. Music is the key issue, as well as the intention of the game. The characters and their surroundings are continually moving to different sounds. When a player moveshis game character, its moves change the music, with new moves forming always new tunes.
After the a first version launched in 2012 in Los Angeles, the PC version followed in 2014. In 2014, the iOS version was released. Today, the game is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and iOS. In addition, an Android version is currently being developed. Next to its two founders, Threaks employs a staff of six.
