Record imports into Hamburg in 2022

23 March 2023
Goods worth EUR 80.8 billion imported

Goods worth a record EUR 80.8 billion were imported into Hamburg in 2022 accounting for an increase of 22 per cent year-on-year, according to the Statistics Office North. China remained the most important trading partner in 2022 with a trade value of EUR 11.4 billion followed by the United States (EUR 11.1 billion), the Netherlands (EUR 5.2 billion) and France and Russia (EUR 4.3 billion respectively).

Exports rise but remain below pre-pandemic levels

The value of exports increased by 20.6 per cent year-on-year to EUR 51.7 billion, according to Statistics North, but remain under the pre-pandemic level of EUR 53.4 billion in 2019. China remained the most important consumer country in 2022 with exports amounting to EUR 4.1 billion followed by France (EUR 3.1 billion), the United States (EUR 3 billion), Turkey and the Netherlands (EUR 2.7 billion respectively).

Data collection of imports and exports differs

However, the methodology of data collection differs for imports and exports. While exports refer to all goods produced or processed in Hamburg, imports include all goods temporarily stored in Hamburg as the Port of Hamburg serves as a stopover for many imported goods. Thus, the value of imports into Hamburg is particularly high compared to other German states.
