Plans to make Jungfernstieg free of cars presented

Jungfernstieg in downtown Hamburg to be car-free from October

One of Hamburg’s main thoroughfares, Jungfernstieg, is to become largely free of cars from October, according to plans presented Wednesday (August 4, 2020). The measure should "improve conditions for walking, cycling and bus traffic, and provide greater traffic safety, less noise and exhaust fumes," said Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition. Initiated by the Department of Urban Development and Housing, the Department of Transport and Mobility Transition and the Hamburg-Mitte District Office, this temporary solution should pave the way for reconstructing Jungfernstieg from autumn 2021.

No more burdens on retail amid corona

From October onwards, only public transport will be permitted on Jungfernstieg e.g. city tours (red lines), delivery services and bicycle traffic. Falko Droßmann, Head of the Hamburg-Mitte District Office, pointed out: "The project will involve temporary solutions initially and without major building sites. The retail sector has already been hit by the corona crisis and we aim to avert an even greater blow from rebuilding measures.” The temporary solution includes signage, the creation of a marked traffic island in the centre and three barrier-free pedestrian crossings inside the existing fords Große Bleichen, Neuer Wall and Alsterarkaden.

“The inner-city shapes the image of our city and forms an important part of Hamburg's identity. Based on our inner-city concept, things are becoming more concrete now. The largely car-free Jungfernstieg will be a first step," said Dr. Dorothee Stapelfeldt, Senator for Urban Development and Housing.

Larger traffic-calming area

The exit from Neuer Wall and the entrance to Grosse Bleichen will be open only to cyclists from autumn. The one-way street in Poststraße will be reversed and will enlarge the traffic-calming area from jetties on the Inner Lake Alster to part of the Passagenviertel. This should improve the quality of stay there and give people more spaces to explore. The Bergstrasse will remain accessible from the Ballindamm direction.
