Job to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in augmented, virtual and mixed reality from August 2023

The Hamburg-based Farmsen Media Technology Vocational School (BS 19) is launching a new, three-year dual training course as "immersive media designer" from August to meet the growing demand for professionals in augmented and virtual reality. The course was developed and the curriculum expanded with the advance of digitalisation and amid a rising number of applicants. Qualified professionals can work in film, TV, gaming, advertising agencies and in companies with large marketing budgets, the construction sector or in medicine.

Huge potential for growth

The theoretical aspect of training will take place at the Farmsen Media Technology Vocational School (BS 19), where immersive media is already covered in the "Media Designer Image and Sound" course. Helge Berlitz-Olle, Head of Studies at BS 19, said: "The new profession of immersive media designer was developed in response to demand from representatives of the XR and other media sectors." Ties Rabe, Senator for Education, remarked: "The introduction of the  'immersive media designer' course is important for future-oriented education in Hamburg. We want to offer young people in Hamburg a perspective in an industry that holds huge potential for innovation and growth. The course offers our skilled workers a basis for a future-proof qualification."

Designing virtual and augmented realities

The new course trains the design of virtual and augmented realities and their application in various industries. Emphasis is on developing concepts, turning ideas into interactive experiences and creating audiovisual content. Aspiring designers learn the basics of computer science, programming 3D applications, designing user interfaces and processing audiovisual media. "This new course offers young people an opportunity to fully exploit their creative potential in a rapidly changing media landscape and working world," said Dr Sandra Garbade, Managing Director of the Hamburg Institute for Vocational Training. Companies should offer the next generation practical training. Anyone interested in becoming a training company can contact the Chamber of Commerce in Hamburg.
