Concept to make tourism more successful, attractive and sustainable - key industry in region

A total of 20 tourism organisations and Chambers of Commerce throughout the Hamburg Metropolitan Region (MRH) are drawing up a concept to make regional tourism more successful, attractive, sustainable and ready for the future. The concept is due for completion in early 2023.

New fields of action

This latest concept addresses key issues such as labour shortages, sustainability and mobility, a statement said. The concerns of local people are to be given greater consideration. Active tourism such as waterborne activities, cycling and hiking hold enormous potential for increasing the added value of tourism and improving the range of services offered.

Tourism crucial to region

Tourism is clearly among the key industries in the metropolitan region, according to a new report by MRH. Overnight and day visitors spent around 336 million days in the region in 2019 and spent between EUR 31 and EUR 144 per person per day resulting in gross sales of a good EUR 15.6 billion of which the hospitality industry earned EUR 7  billion, retail EUR 5 billion and the services industry some EUR 3.5 billion.
