Ministry of Culture to fund 52 independent art projects and "Hauptsache Frei" festival

The Ministry of Culture and Media has announced grants of EUR 2 million for 52 projects in the liberal performing arts in the 2023/24 season and including EUR 375,000 for the "Hauptsache Frei" festival through 2026, according to a press release Friday (January 13, 2023).

Vital independent scene

"The daily news make us constantly aware that freedom cannot be taken for granted; it is an asset that must be protected every day," said Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media. Year after year, the independent performing arts scene defends this very freedom persistently and reassuringly in terms of content and structure. "From working conditions to sustainability to cohesion - the applications submitted reflect an enormous thematic range that illustrates the essentiality of the independent scene," he added.

Diverse grants

Four independent expert juries recommended projects in the spoken theatre/musical theatre/performance, dance, children's and youth theatre scenes as well as basic and research support, conceptual and young talent support, and festival support. The projects included several by the Kulturfabrik Kampnagel, Fundus Theater and Lichthof Theater. The "Hauptsache Frei" is among the key festivals for Hamburg's independent scene.
