Firm's bio-plastic packaging tops "Start-up 2022" category

The Hamburg-based start-up, Traceless, won Tuesday (September 13, 2022) the German Founder's Prize 2022 in the category "Start-up 2022" for bio-plastic packaging that decomposes itself and offers a sustainable alternative to the plastic blight in oceans and on land. The spin-off from the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH), founded by Johanna Baare and Dr Anne Lamp, is now laying plans for the future.

All kinds of funding schemes for Hamburg's start-ups

"The Traceless project shows us how research can make a very practical contribution to a sustainable future," said Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality. Traceless received funds through Hamburg Innovation's "Calls for Transfer" in the early phase. "Start-up activities are a top priority at TU Hamburg", said Prof. Andreas Timm-Giel, President of TU Hamburg. They receive backing through courses and idea competitions as well as funding schemes such as Exist or Startup Dock, he added.

2021 Traceless won the Future Hamburg Award initiated by Hamburg Marketing and landed second place with its business idea behind the start-up Breeze Technologies.

Traceless to expand low-cost production

The founders pooled their synergies in 2020 and have developed a versatile plastic that is fully compostable. Meanwhile, several stakeholders have invested in the company. The raw material comes from agricultural by-products and is used to make fully compostable storage-stable films, solid materials and wafer-thin coatings. The material has the same properties as plastics. The real innovation, however, is the relatively cheap production. Lamp and Baare now plan to increase production, which saves up to 87 per cent of CO2 over conventional plastic, and to start operating a new industrial plant with a monthly capacity of up to 500 tonnes by late 2023.
