The Hamburg-based Evocal Health has won the "Digital Innovations Start-up Prize" presented by the German Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection for its artificial intelligence. Dirk Simon, joint founder of Evocal Health accepted the prize in the health industry category during an online ceremony in April. The start-up's technology analyses changes in vocal biomarkers and detects diseases.

The award honours outstanding start-ups for a high degree of innovation, unique selling points, customer benefits, market potential and competitiveness. Simon commented: "Science and research have shown that a variety of diseases significantly change the physiology of the vocal systems and are barely audible to the human ear." The AI developed by Evocal Health searches the voice's audio signal for traits of a disease. As a result, the technology can be used to diagnose, monitor or to classify the severity of a disease.

Founded in 2021 by Philip Mertes and Simon, the company works with leading research institutions and health care providers and plans to open offices in Berlin and Munich in May 2022 and remains headquartered in Hamburg.
