Two leading technology and business centres sign agreement

Dr Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics, and Masao Uchibori, Governor of the Japanese prefecture of Fukushima, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Hamburg Tuesday (April 25, 2023) deepening energy policy co-operation in place since the 2011 nuclear reactor accident in Fukushima.

Network of politics, administration, industry and science

The agreement boosts bilateral co-operation on renewable energies and foresees mutual visits, joint projects and an intense exchange of information especially between experts. Market opportunities for renewable energy technologies in both regions are to be explored. A network consisting of representatives of the political sphere, administration, industry and science will be set up to assist companies with market expansion and investments.

Free trade agreement between EU and Japan

Fukushima Prefecture is committed to renewable energy in Japan and offers a high share of green energy. It is also home to renowned research institutions and plays an important role as a hydrogen supplier. Hamburg, on the other hand, is a leading European centre of wind power and hydrogen and many ongoing energy projects to decarbonise the local economy. A free trade agreement between Japan and Germany sees both nations co-operate closely in high-tech, green energy and many other economic sectors.
