"Aviation contributes significantly to our society's mobility. We are working on solutions that contribute to the sustainable development of air transport to ensure that this remains the case," said Prof. Dr.-Ing. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, Chairwoman of DLR 's Executive Board. The new institute will bring together ecological and economic, as well as technological and social aspects of air transport. "It combines the skills for evaluating air transport markets and value chains. The institute is positioning itself as a competent point of contact for the aviation industry, society and politics," she added.
Merger of DLR Air Transport Systems facility and DLR Institute of Airports and Air Traffic
Around 50 employees are working at the German Aerospace Center's (DLR) new Institute of Air Transport in Cologne and Hamburg after the merger of DLR's Air Transport Systems and the DLR Institute of Airports and Air Traffic in early April. Emphasis is on research into air transport economics.

The branches in both Cologne and Hamburg are close to airports, the aviation industry, politics, administration and research institutions. The DLR Institute researches air traffic development, air traffic economics, air transport management, and flight operations concepts. That includes forecasts on how air traffic, the air transport network and its key drivers are likely to develop. "We analyse which operational measures can be used to reduce the climate impact of the overall air transport system. We are also concerned with how air traffic disruptions can be efficiently countered," said Dr Florian Linke, acting director of the DLR Institute of Air Transport.
