Dr. Eike-Christian Schulz at UKE’s Institute of Biochemistry and Signal Transduction will work with his counterparts at the University of Hamburg and the Universities of Lund and Copenhagen on the Dynamics of Protein-Ligand Interactions (Dynaplix) project. The aim is to set up a new structural biology research area that combines time-resolved X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. This will facilitate the integrative study of dynamic biomolecular processes. The grant hightlights the “international orientation of research at UKE!”, according to Prof. Dr. Blanche Schwappach-Pignataro, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Member of UKE’s Board.
European Research Council funding three research projects
The European Research Council (ERC) has announced funds of EUR 8.7 million for a new international research project focusing on complex interactions between molecules which is being conducted by the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and the Universities of Lund and Copenhagen. UKE has received EUR 2.5 million of the total funds marking its second ERC Synergy Grant. Two other research projects focusing on the microstructure of the human brain and the impact of the environment on mental health are receiving an ERC Consolidator Grant totalling EUR 4 million of which EUR 2.5 million is going to UKE.

Two neuroscience projects have also received funds. Dr. Siawoosh Mohammadi at UKE's Institute for Systemic Neuroscience, uses MRI and artificial intelligence to identify new therapeutic approaches to epilepsy as part of the "MR-Stain" research project. Prof. Dr. Simone Kühn, Clinic and Polyclinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, focuses on how the environment effects well-being and mental health as part of the "Brain Scape" project. ERC is funding the projects over the next five to six years as part of the "Horizon Europe/Excellent Science" funding directive. The ERC Consolidator Grant is awarded to ambitious and established researchers while the ERC Synergy Grant forges synergies between two to four excellent researchers in joint projects.
