EUR 1.6 million for UKE's open access publications

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has earmarked EUR 1.6 million in funds for open access publications at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) from 2023 for three years, a press release said Tuesday (November 8, 2022). Termed the "publication of the future" by the German Ministry of Education and Research, the measure should ease networking between scientists and raise the visibility of results and make knowledge more accessible.

Costs of open access publications

Launched with the Associate Dean for Research and the Central Medical Library,  Prof. Dr. Petra Arck, Dean of Research at UKE, noted: "Freely accessible research results are gaining importance in scientific and social discussions." DFG's funding enables researchers to publish in open access form, which is usually quite costly. Researchers can also apply for grants in the future. Open access goes beyond scientific publications and includes freely accessible educational materials or educational resources as well as open source software which comes with publicly-available source codes.
