Organ donations in Hamburg more than doubled

Above-average rise in Hanseatic city

The number of organ donors rose across Germany in 2018 and more than doubled in Hamburg, according to the German Foundation for Organ Transplantation (DSO). Last year, 55 people up from 24 in 2017 donated their organs. The overall number of organs donated in Hamburg has also increased significantly from 77 (2017) to 182 (2018). Some 3,113 donated organs were recorded in 2018 (2017: 2,594), according to the DSO.

On the right track

“It is a good sign that the number of organ donors is rising again and that it has even more than doubled in Hamburg. This has saved the lives of many seriously ill patients and shows that more people are concerned with the important issue of organ donation. The good figures indicate that we are on the right track with the new requirements in our state laws on the appointment and release of transplant officers in hospitals,” said Cornelia Prüfer-Storcks, Senator for Health.
