This year’s winners of the globe’s most prestigious prize for aircraft cabins received their trophies on tuesday evening. The thrill of winning the Crystal Cabin Award 2015 was shared by B/E Aerospace, Embraer, SABIC Innovative Plastics, SII Deutschland, ViaSat, Etihad Airways and Hamburg University of Applied Sciences.
On Monday, each of the 21 finalists appeared in person before the 24 international experts of the Judging Panel for final questions. The “Cabin Oscars” were initiated by the cluster Hamburg Aviation in 2007 and presented this year for the ninth time – as always, at a formal ceremony at the Hotel Atlantic in Hamburg as a feature of the programme for the “Aircraft Interiors Expo”.
B/E Aerospace received the first Crystal Cabin Award: The US-american manufacturer developed the “Solar Eclipse” concept, during which a thin solar cell film is installed in the sun visor of the cabin window, providing passengers with electricity to charge their electronic devices during flight.
Further winners are the Brazilian manufacturer Embraer in the category “Industrial Design & Visionary Concepts”, SABIC Innovative Plastics in the category “Material & Components” as well as SII Germany in the category “Passenger Comfort Hardware”. In addition, the US company ViaSat received an award in the category “Passenger Comfort Systems”, whilst Etihad Airways convinced the jury in the category “Premium Class & VIP” with the first three room apartment in a commercial airliner.
Meanwhile, the Crystal Cabin Award in the category “University” went to Marc Spille, student of aviation studies at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. In collaboration with Airbus, he developed a trash container that uses a vacuum technology to compress trash bags into a space-saving format.
All winners and finalists are presented until Thursday, 16th of April at the Aircraft Interior Expo at Hamburg’s fairground.
