Preparations are underway for the seventh India Week in Hamburg from November 6-12, 2017. Participants met Tuesday (January 17) in Hamburg’s Town Hall for a kick-off event to present their agenda and for networking. Many diverse, eagerly-awaited events are on this year’s agenda with over 90 participants.
Hamburg’s relations with India
The 2017 India Week is set to be the most varied ever. Focal points include commerce, culture, politics, society, law and sport. Madan Lal Raigar, Indian Consul-General, noted: “The India Week offers a unique opportunity and platform to discover 'Incredible India’ that appeals to the mind, soul and body with many diverse events that reflect India’s far-reaching history, culture, heritage and German-India relations and particularly Hamburg-India relations.”
Close economic ties
Hamburg and India have traditionally had close economic ties and over 550 Hamburg-based firms operate in India presently, according to the Chamber of Commerce Hamburg. Around 135 firms have branches there while over 40 Indian companies have branches or representatives in Hamburg. The Port of Hamburg is crucial to economic relations. Hamburg imports mainly textiles, chemical products, food and fodder from India.
The India Week Hamburg is being organised by the Senate Chancellery with the Cultural Authority Hamburg, the German-Indian Round Table, the Chamber of Commerce, the Hamburg Development Corporation (HWF) and the Hamburg Representative Office Mumbai and the Consulate-General of the Republic of India.
