Hans-Joachim Flebbe, founder of the Cinemaxx chain and operator of the Astor cinemas, celebrated the opening of the Astor Film Lounge in HafenCity on Friday (November 30, 2018). The feel-good factor is particularly important to him, said Flebbe in his opening speech. The halls are acoustically shielded with 1.5 m thick walls and spring-loaded – similar to the Elbphilharmonie.
The cinema has three halls and around 430 seats. The movie theatre is located in a building complex with hotel, offices, apartments and restaurants. The Astor Film Lounge is laying on the luxury with red carpet, free cloakroom, a welcoming drink, adjustable leather armchairs, Dolby Atmos sound system and service for seated cinemagoers. The aim is to combine traditional cinema with the latest film technology and all mod cons. During the opening, Flebbe said he had spent almost ten years planning this cinema. The cinema in HafenCity has three halls, a large hall with 235 seats and more than 6,000 LED spots, another hall with around 118 seats and a club cinema with a library and around 75 seats. The spring-loaded construction and particularly thick walls provide an optimum sound experience.
Over 40 years experience
Flebbe set up multiplex cinemas all over Germany and left Cinemaxx in 2008. At present, he operates smaller Astor cinemas with sophisticated equipment in Berlin, Cologne and Munich. Flebbe also operates the Berlin Zoopalast, his first Cinemaxx cinema in Hanover and the Savoy in Hamburg. Around 2.5 million movie fans visit his cinemas every year, Flebbe said.
