Hamburg's 16 Christmas markets to return to pre-pandemic cheer

16 November 2022
Ray of hope for stall owners and more attractions this festive season

People in Hamburg and beyond can look forward to the opening of 16 Christmas markets from Thursday (November 17, 2022) with all the usual attractions and plenty of mulled wine and punch on Fleetinsel, an atmospheric City Hall market and the vibrancy of the Reeperbahn. This comes after two-years of pandemic-induced restrictions and offers market stall owners a glimmer of hope even though certain hygiene measures will remain in place. Retail in Hamburg will also profit from the expected increase in footfall.

Christmas in downtown Hamburg

The historic Christmas market outside City Hall is among the well-known and most popular Christmas markets. This year's highlights include a Santa Claus, who flies over the market three times a night and tells a Christmas story, in addition to 80 stalls selling all kinds of delicacies and gifts. Santa Claus will take to the skies from November 21 to December 23 while the Winter Forest at Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz remains opens until December 30. Fir trees and Christmas parades on Saturdays will rekindle festive cheer reminiscent of pre-pandemic years from November 17.

Market at Michel, mulled wine on Fleetinsel

Hamburg's oldest Christmas market has been held in the St. Michaelis Church since 1922 and will open its doors from November 25th this year. On the occasion of its 100th anniversary, more than 100 artisans will exhibit works of art, fashion, jewellery and quirky gift ideas. The Christmas market on the Fleetinsel on the waterfront is great for mulled wine after work and gets underway from November 21 until December 3 well away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

Reeperbahn style and queer Christmas market

The slightly different Christmas market aka Santa Pauli on the Reeperbahn will open its red and pink doors to live music and a bar with a fireplace from November 14 to December 23. Winter Pride in St. Georg is Hamburg's only gay and lesbian Christmas market. On weekends (Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m.), several DJs will play rousing, rhythmic beats and perhaps attract a humbug or two. This unique Christmas market is open from November 21 to December 30.
