The Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe opened its doors Wednesday in Bremen for a two-day conference (October 20-21, 2021) where Hamburg is being showcased as a centre of hydrogen. Northern Germany and Hamburg are particularly suitable for a green hydrogen sector due to their geographical advantages and a potentially large off-take of industrial companies in the region, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Emphasis is on hydrogen and fuel cell technology along the entire value chain. The business development agency, Hamburg Invest, has organised Hamburg's booth at the trade fair.

Huge potential of hydrogen

"Northern Germany already leads the way in terms of the energy transition. The development of a green hydrogen sector ties in seamlessly with this and opens up an opportunity to take a joint pole position in this field," said Dr Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of Hamburg Invest. "We have joined forces in the North German Hydrogen Alliance, HY-5, and are demonstrating the enormous potential of hydrogen technology in our region." The five states of Hamburg, Bremen, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have launched the Hydrogen Alliance HY-5 on the initiative of the Northern Chamber of Industry and Commerce. The initiative, which is backed by five economic development agencies, aims to make northern Germany Europe's strongest regional green hydrogen centre with solutions along the entire value chain and will highlight key large-scale hydrogen projects in the states during the Hydrogen Technology Expo,.

Solutions and projects along the entire hydrogen value chain already exist. The Hanseatic city has set itself the goal of driving forward the decarbonisation of industry and developing a green hydrogen sector. The Hamburg-based Airbus, ArcelorMittal, Gasnetz Hamburg, GreenPlug, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG, Hamburg Port Authority, HADAG Seetouristik und Fährdienst and Stadtreinigung have joined forces with the Green Hydrogen Hub, consisting of Shell, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Wärme Hamburg, to form the Hydrogen Verbund Hamburg. The network is part of a major campaign by the German government. The German Ministry of Economics and Transport and the individual states are putting EUR 8 billion towards 62 projects nationwide. The City of Hamburg is receiving EUR 520 million and an investment of EUR 1.6 billion overall.
