Filmfest Hamburg presents world cinema in theatres and digitally

"The Filmfest Hamburg presents us with the very best world cinema over the coming days and shows that cinema is alive despite corona," said Carsten Brosda, Senator of Culture and Media. "It opens up a window onto the big world and takes us into other (fictitious) realities - despite all travel restrictions and gives us an opportunity for short movie holidays around the globe." Due to restrictions on seating and social distancing requirements, the movies are being supplemented by 50 digitally accessible movies, which can be borrowed online with streaming tickets.

This year's festival features over 70 films in nine sections and will also continue the successful "Filmfest ums Eck" (Film Festival around the Corner) initiative. Residents of districts across Hamburg can enjoy cinema, festival guests and faraway places up close at their favourite cinema in a show of support for local cinema operators. From October 2-3, 2020, the 17th Documentary Film Week Hamburg will screen in the Metropolis cinema. The winner of Venice's coveted Golden Lion, "Nomadland", directed Chloé Zhao and starring Oscar winner Franceis McDormand, among the highlights on the closing night.
