Crystal Cabin Award has record entries. New selection category launched

The renowned Crystal Cabin Award or the “Oscars” of the aircraft cabin has reported record submissions with 95 entries from 18 countries as it prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary. A total of 78 ideas and innovations for aircraft cabins have made it onto the shortlist. This year’s theme is surfing, streaming and texting during flights in addition to innovative light concepts.

Judder-free broadband experience

More and more passengers expect connectivity during flights and most bring a smartphone or tablet on board. To meet their demands, manufacturers and airlines are expanding connectivity technology. The U.S. firm Gogo will fit its 2Ku system to aircraft, equipping them with a dual antenna that allows every passenger to enjoy uninterrupted broadband connectivity throughout their flight.

Modern LED technology

More emphasis is also being placed on the connection inside the cabin. Many manufacturers are developing solutions to integrate the content on a personal device with the in-flight entertainment system, use an iPad as a monitor in the backrest on short flights, or recharge a smartphone just by putting it on the armrest. A pleasant atmosphere is also high on the agenda as well as more entertainment and connectivity. Modern LED technology allows the cabin to be lit in different colours regardless of the hour as simulating a sunrise, for instance, during a long flight may keep jet lag to a minimum.

Complete cabin concepts

This year, an eighth category called “best cabin concept” is being added to the seven existing categories of cabin systems, electronic systems, passenger comfort hardware, visionary concepts, university, material and components, green cabin, health, safety and environment. The eighth category distinguishes complete cabin concepts that have already been used or are ready for the market.

A 27-member jury of international experts from airlines, manufacturers, professor and journalists has selected the submissions. Three finalists in each category were chosen and will present their concepts during the Aircraft Interiors Expo (April 5–7, 2016) in Hamburg. The winners of the Crystal Cabin Awards 2016 will receive their prizes at a jubilee gala in Hotel Atlantic Kempinski on April 5.
