Hamburg Airport launching new virtual reality app

Free app gives insight into new virtual departure gate, destinations and airlines

A free virtual reality app is now available for iOS and Android devices and gives users information in a virtual reality-boarding gate about flight destinations and airlines at Hamburg Airport, a press release said Friday (February 2, 2018). The app has been developed by Hamburg Airport in co-operation with the Bremen-based VistoVR start-up and provides photographs, 360-degree clips and videos of places like New York, Marrakesh and the Algarve to give users ideas for their next holiday. The app can be used with a virtual reality headset.

Virtual reality pilot project

Dr. Jörgen Kearsley, Head of Aviation Marketing at Hamburg Airport, said: “Hamburg Airport is playing a pioneering role among airports with the virtual reality app. Our guests can find information about destinations in the virtual boarding gate in a new, exciting way and ideas for their next holiday. The app’s contents are updated and renewed regularly so the user always has something to discover as well as new holiday destinations.” Hamburg Airport has launched the pilot project to determine whether virtual reality is suitable for informing passengers about destinations and connections and has also developed a website with more information about the new app.

Hamburg Airport investing in digital communication

Sebastian Budde, founder of VistoVR, said: “The virtual reality boarding gate underlines Hamburg Airport’s position towards digital communication. The virtual reality technologies will faciltiate the flow of far more information in future. That makes it attractive not only for the user and gives the company added value and many more opportunities. The collaboration with Hamburg Airport has laid the foundation for more exciting and innovative projects.“
