Hamburg Airport is expecting around 80,000 passengers between Friday (December 23) and Tuesday (December 2016) compared to 89,320 passengers in 2015. Christmas falls on a weekend this year meaning fewer business travellers will be taking to the skies, according to Hamburg Airport. A total of 812 aircraft took off during the first five holidays of the Christmas season last year.
Last take-off on Christmas Eve
Around 22,000 passengers on 195 aircraft are likely to make Friday (December 23rd) the busiest travel day. The last departure on Christmas Eve will be an Emirates flight to Dubai at 9 pm. A TAP flight from Lisbon will be the last arriving flight on Christmas Eve at 10.40 pm. The airport is expecting around 10,500 passengers on 94 departing flights on December 25. The last departure on New Year’s Eve will be an Emirates flight to Dubai at 9 pm. An easyJet flight from Athens will be the last arriving flight at 10.45 pm. On January 1st, TAP will depart for Lisbon at 6 am.
Skiing and bathing resorts popular
Southern Spain, the Canary Islands and Majorca are among the most popular destinations for Christmas holidays this year. Mediterranean resorts in other countries are also popular as well as far away places like Dubai and especially in winter. Many passengers are also heading to ski resorts such as Innsbruck, Salzburg, Zurich, Bern, Geneva and Klagenfurt on direct flights from Hamburg Airport.
