Every euro in added value at Hamburg Airport generates two euros for Hamburg, a study published Monday (September 5, 2017) by the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI) has found. Gross added value comes to at least EUR 500 million annually and includes the catering sector, retail, tourism, car hire as well as the airport.
6,500 jobs secured by airport
Every job at the airport secures 1.8 positions in the Hanseatic city. At least 6,500 jobs in Hamburg are linked to the Flughafen Hamburg GmbH and 15,000 with the hangar bringing added value well over the EUR 500 million mark.
Airport’s positive factors
The airport’s proximity to the city and above-average connections to the inner city traffic mean transport costs are low and the exchange of knowledge is higher. Both factors make Hamburg’s economy more attractive to new firms eyeing the location. Many sectors profit from the purchasing power of guests from home and abroad. In 2016, this led to EUR 1.3 billion in local demand, according to HWWI.
