The southern Überseequartier gets a new architectural face. For all eleven buildings of the district developed by Unibail-Rodamco in co-operation with HafenCity Hamburg GmbH, the Hamburg Ministry of Urban Development and Housing and famous international and national architectural firms, new architectural designs were now presented.
International Star Architects Design The New Waterfront
The highlight of the new area developed in the south of Überseequartier will be a spectacular waterfront on the Elbe river. Internationally renowned architects like the Pritzker Prize winner Christian de Portzamparc or UNStudio will be shaping its face along with major German and Hamburg architect. A new development plan is currently being drafted, forming the basis for issuing planning applications and building permits. Unibail-Rodamco plans to start construction work in 2017; with the completion of the central areas in the southern Überseequartier scheduled for 2021.
Eleven Outstanding Buildings
In addition to the French architect Christian de Portzamparc, who designed the new east of Paris on the southern bank of the Seine, also Carsten Roth architect, léonwohlhage, KBNK, Hild and K architects Böge Lindner K2 Architekten, Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei, an UNStudio were involved in the planning relaunch. Further partners include BB + GG Arquitectes for open space planning, Saguez & Partners for the interior design, and Sobek design for the roof structure. For the coordination of individual projects and compliance with the high design standards, HPP International was selected as the master planner. As always at HafenCity, high sustainability standards will also guide construction in the south of Überseequartier. All buildings will be certified in accordance with the HafenCity Ecolabel in gold or by the international BREEAM Excellent standard.
New Elbe Panorama
With the iconic cruise terminal by Portzamparc, two 60 metres tall towers in the middle and a sculptural 70 metres high office building at the Magdeburg port, the southern Überseequartier will feature a unique skyline along the waterfront, with the brick character make room for bright, glass facades that reflect the river, the port, and the sky
The Next Steps
The new development plan currently being drawn will be presented in the second half of 2016, providing the basis for building permit applications and the subsequent granting of them. Construction will commence 2017. The completion of the central areas of retail, catering, entertainment, cruise terminal, hotel and first parts of office and residential units are scheduled for 2021.
