Christmas business 2015: retailers in Hamburg are very pleased

Results of an online survey by Chamber of Commerce. Over-the-counter-trade exceeds expectations

Retailers in Hamburg have drawn a very positive balance of the recently-ended Christmas business 2015. Just under a third of over-the-counter retailers, who took part in the annual survey by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, said they earned higher or the same turnover as during Christmas business 2014. Results in online trade have proven just as good. Commenting on the results of the survey, Prof. Hans-Jörg Schmidt-Trenz, CEO Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, noted: “Overall, retailers in Hamburg are very satisfied with the Christmas business. Expectations especially in over-the-counter-trade have been clearly surpassed.”

Better than previous years

The rather modest business expectations expressed in the sector last November were not met. At the start of Christmas trade, only a quarter of over-the-counter retailers believed higher turnover than in 2014 could be achieved. “The result is clearly better especially compared to those of recent years,” Schmidt-Trenz stressed.

A total of 242 Hamburg-based companies in over-the-counter retail and mail-order business took part in the survey. Here are some more specific results: 37 per cent of firms in over-the-counter retail earned higher turnover than during Christmas business 2014. Around 36 per cent of those firms earned at least the same turnover as in the previous year. Only 27 per cent of those surveyed reported lower turnover.

Sales in online trade and per mail order also proved positive. Some 41 per cent of those surveyed said they managed to increase turnover while just 28 per cent reported lower turnover than in 2014. During Christmas business 2015, around 31 per cent of companies earned turnover on a par with the previous year.

The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce has done an online survey of expectations among retailers in Hamburg regularly for the past eight years.
