Start of project competition for Hamburg residents

Horner Geest to become Hamburg's longest park. Funding of EUR 5 million from city and German government

The nine-kilometre landscape axle, Horner Geest, from the city to Öjendorfer Lake is to become Hamburg’s longest park and will be funded with EUR 5 million from the city and the German government. Local residents can submit their ideas for projects on “deinegeest.hamburg” and decide how to spend EUR 1 million of these funds. The proposals can range from playgrounds, sports facilities, parks and natural oasis to urban gardening.

Collecting ideas for region

Jens Kerstan, Senator for the Environment said: “Over 20,000 new apartments are to be built in eastern Hamburg alone. To retain the quality of life despite the density, we need intelligent planning for parks and verdant areas. The landscape axle, Horner Geest, is an important building block.”

The Hamburg-based landscape architects, Breimann & Bruun, analysed the existing state of affairs and have come up with first ideas for developing the green space. A planner is to be charged in June with developing an overall concept. Residents’ proposals are to be included in the plans.

Government programme “National Urban Development Projects”

Ideas can be submitted from June 4, 2016. Then, a whole chain of outdoor workshops for gathering ideas will begin in a marquee at the Burgstrasse underground stop. Ideas can also be submitted online until August 21. A shortlist of 25 proposals will be drawn up and further developed with residents in various workshops. This process will last until late 2016.

Since last November, the Horner Geest project has been funded as part of the German government programme, National Urban Development Projects. It has a volume of EUR 4.95 million; EUR 3.3 million of which is contributed by the German government. The Environmental Authority and Hamburg’s Central District Office are jointly executing the project.
