Hamburg’s Mayor Olaf Scholz traveled to China, accompanied by a 40-member delegation with representatives from business and science. Until the end of the week, Beijing and Shanghai will be visited. The programme includes numerous conversations with decision-makers from politics and industry with the aim to intensify the relations between China and Hamburg. In Beijing, Hamburg’s application to host the Olympic Games will also be high on the agenda.
Meeting with Senior Chinese Politicians
Discussions at political level are an integral part of the overall travel programme. Scholz will thus be meeting Vice Prime Minister Ma Kai and the Deputy Foreign Minister of China, Wang Chao in Beijing. In Shanghai, Scholz will talk to his colleague, the Lord Mayor of Shanghai, Yang Xiong. The visit of Hamburg’s First Mayor in the PRC is also undertaken to strengthen the economic relations between Hamburg and its Chinese partners.
Business Talks On Hamburg’s Boom Industries
To strengthens Hamburg’s aerospace industry, talks will be conducted at the Lufthansa Technik subsidiary Ameco and COMAC Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd. In addition, Scholz and members of the business delegatio will visit COSCO China Ocean Shipping Group Company in Beijing and China Shipping in Shanghai.
Also, the wind power industry will be given more attention during the trip. In China, energy efficiency plays an increasingly important role. So the theme of energy policy at the center of the conversation will be with the wind turbine manufacturer Goldwind and with the wind turbine manufacturer Envision. Hamburg is Germany’s “wind energy capital”: With approximately 1,500 companies in the renewable energy and nearly 5,000 employees in the field of wind energy, the industry is an important economic factor. With China as a partner, good opportunities for co-operation are offered in the sector of renewable energies.
2016: 30 years of Twinning with Shanghai
Good trade relations, open-mindedness and interest in different cultures connect the ports of Shanghai and Hamburg. In 2016, both cities will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of their partnership. Since 1995, the Hamburg Liaison Office has been successfully promoting the interests of Hamburg in Shanghai. In 2004, a port partnership was entered with Shanghai. To expand Hamburg’s influence in China even further, Hamburg’s First Mayor Scholz will sign a co-operation agreement with the China Federation of Industrial Economics to set up a Hamburg representative office in northern China.
Olympia & Europe
During a visit of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) in Beijing, Hamburg’s First Mayor Scholz will promote Hamburg as venue of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games iin talks with COC President Liu Peng. “Perspectives of the European Integration” will be explained by Scholz in a lecture at Fudan University and in the ensuing discussion with students. The delegation will return to Hamburg on 14 November.
