Hamburg to Represent Germany at the New Silk Road

Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and China Federation of Industrial Emonomics (CFIE) sign co-operation agreement

The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce is the only German founding member of the Belt Road and Industrial and Commercial Alliance” (BRICA), an association of chambers of commerce and business associations along the “new Silk Road”. The vision of a “Silk Road Economic Belt” and “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” grand initiative was presented in 2013 by the Chinese President Xi Jinping and elaborated in 2015. In summer, Xi Jinping has called a rail link to Europe a key objective. Thus, Hans-Jörg Schmidt-Trenz, CEO of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, now signed memorandum in Beijing, which enables German and Hamburg-based companies to participate in the “Silk Road” strategy.

Co-Operation On Equal Footing

At an “Industry 4.0 Roundtable”, Schmidt-Trenz thanked the China Federation ofIndustrial Economics (CFIE) and its vice-chairman Liu Haiyan for the great honour of being a founding member. According to the CE of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, China thus recognised the long-term efforts of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce in improving and expanding Sino-European relations in trade. The project of the new Silk Road has the potential to further strengthen trade relations between China and Europe, and Hamburg, in particular. To cope with the challenges, thus Schmidt-Trenz, cooperations are the answers. “This close German-Chinese co-operation has to happen on equal footing with equal rights.”

China-Europe Friendship Award

The newly founded BRICA will be a suitable took to further expand the connections between CFIE and the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. The politically influential industry association CFIE is already an important partner of the “Hamburg Summit: China meets Europe”. Since the third Hamburg Summit of 2008, CFIE has been acting as Chinese co-host of the conference, and has been sending high-level business delegations to attend the Hamburg conference. For his commitment, the CFIE was honoured in 2014 with the China-Europe Friendship Award of the “Hamburg Summit: China meets Europe”. Schmidt-Trenz took the talks to officially invite the Chinese government attend the next “Hamburg Summit: China meets Europe” due to take place in the autumn of 2016.
