Hamburg In Mourning: Helmut Schmidt Deceased

The former German Chancellor and internationally respected Hamburg politician died at his home on Tuesday afternoon at 96 years of age

With Helmut Schmidt, one of the most respected post-war politicians has left the world. Born in Hamburg on 23 December 1918, the graduate of economics first made a name by successfully handling Hamburg’s 1962 disastrous flooding as the city state’s first minister of the interior. In 1974, Schmidt succeeded Willy Brandt as German chancellor, a position held until 1982 despite political challenges such as the oil crisis and Mogadischu. Since 1983 Helmut Schmidt, has been holding the position of co-publisher of the German weekly newspaper “Die Zeit” that honours the internationally acclaimed SPD politician in this obituary.
