Hamburg’s 828th Port Anniversary celebrations ended at the weekend with a total of seven luxury vessels in the harbour and after an impressive show. This year’s “birthday guests” included the new MSC Preziosa, which celebrated its first arrival in Hamburg just two days earlier and marked the start of a spectacular summer in cruise shipping. The upcoming events include the ship launching ceremony of “Mein Schiff 6” at the Elbphilharmonie as well as the Hamburg Cruise Days – the world’s largest cruise event in September.
“Mein Schiff 6” to be launched at Elbphilharmonie
For many years, Hamburg has been promoting itself as a cruise location and maritime destination with spectacular ship-launching ceremonies. TUI Cruises plans to launch the company’s most recent vessel, the Mein Schiff 6, on June 1, 2017 at the Elbphilharmonie. The patroness of this ceremony will be Latvian artist Iveta Apkalna, head organist at the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. She performs as a soloist in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and at renowned music festivals.
Over 1 million vistors at anniversary celebrations
The 828th Port Anniversary fest is the world’s largest and attracted over 1 million visitors this year. Seven international cruise ships arrived for the event. In just four days, the MS Amadea, the MS Astor, the MSC Preziosa as well as four AIDA ships – AIDAprima, AIDAvita, AIDAluna and AIDAsol – arrived at terminals in Hamburg. The AIDAprima celebrated its first anniversary after its launch in Hamburg last year. Since then, it has departed Hamburg on 52 trips around western Europe. The Rostock-based shipping company is one of the most prominent players in Hamburg this year, with a total of 81 arrivals by six cruise liners.
