Germany’s number one musical metropolis Hamburg will boast another theatre, and one of the most astonishing kind venue: the Mehr! Theatre. For its official opening, the London Symphony Orchestra will give a concert and thrill 2,400 guests with their unparalleled performance of classic music.
Market Halls Goes Musical
Hamburg’s newest venue will open at Grossmarkt, which is a typical site of traditional Hamburg and has so far been reserved for trade only. The new theatre will occupy roughly ten percent of the entire Grossmarkt area. Its landmark halls were completed in 1962 under the direction of architect Bernhard Hermkes. Today, the halls are a registered heritage as one of the last examples of reinforced concrete buildings. In addition to the concrete frame, which is eight centimetres, the vast ceiling, up to 20 metres high, is truly impressive. The new theatre will be fully integrated in the existing Grossmarkt halls. Overall, it will cover some 8.000 square metres on three storeys, with the stage located at ground level and a 19.20 metres tall stage tower under the wavy roof. For the revitalisation as musical venue, 500 tonnes of steel, 350 cubic meters of concrete, 100 km of cable, and 30,000 m² of plasterboard will be installed in the listed market hall.
Unique Stage And Setting
“Hamburg and live entertainment belong together. We are proud to operate in this exceptional setting a modern theater that offers great new options for organisers and visitors alike”, said Günter Irmler, managing director of Mehr! Theater in Hamburg. Next to productions hosted by Mehr! Entertainment, the stage will also be open to other event or show organisers who will be able to enjoy features and show options so far unique in Hamburg, ranging from 20 metres high ceilings to a flexible stage that be expanded from 320 m² to 1.440 m² and viewed from all four sides.

With the London Symphony Orchestra, one of the world’s leading orchestras has been contracted for the opening concert. Soloist will be the Russian-Israeli pianist Roman Zaslavsky, a master of piano technique and sensitive designers of nuances. Gianandrea Noseda will conduct the opening gala.
