The annual “Environmental Partnership Hamburg” takes place on Thursday (June 29, 2017) in the Chamber of Commerce. Over 1,000 member companies of the partnership (Umweltpartnerschaft Hamburg) between the senate and commerce represented by the Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Crafts and the industrial associations save over 300,000 tons of CO2 and around EUR 51 million in costs every year. And the number of companies in the partnership has been growing since 2003. This year’s event will focus on the added value of corporate environmental protection.
12 examples of best practice in Hamburg
A brochure called “Umwelt- und Klimaschutz in Hamburg. Zwölf Best-Practice-Beispiele” (Environmental and Climate Protection in Hamburg. 12 Best Practice Examples) will also be presented. Steinway & Sons, oft hailed as the preeminent piano company, is a model of best practice. Founded in 1928 in Bahrenfeld, the company produces 1,200 pianos and grand pianos every year. Now the company is investing around EUR 3.5 million in an efficient, environment-friendly boiler with cogeneration unit, which is expected to reduce energy consumption by around 10 per cent and cut costs by around EUR 45,000. Klaus Stelter, Manager, said: “It was important to us to send a signal. We at Steinway & Sons place equally high emphasis on energy efficiency, species protection and environmental protection.”
