In 2010, the Hamburg company Sky Sails introduced a sustainable wind propulsion system for the maritime industry. Equipped with their sails, vessels were able to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 35 per cent. Now, their innovative kites are being promoted as powerful alternatives to conventional wind turbines. The first prototype is currently being tested on a trailer. In a next step, a demonstration plant with a capacity of one megawatt is to be built to exploit the wind up to heights of 400 metres.
