Two sustainability awards for Hamburg Süd

Above average marks from Carbon Disclosure Project - top "Gold" mark from EcoVadis for entire supply chain

Hamburg Süd has won awards by two organizations for its sustainability management for the second time, a press release said Tuesday (January 16, 2018). The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) awarded an above-average grade, while EcoVadis gave its highest-possible “Gold” status rating. Commenting on the honours, Dr. Arnt Vespermann, Chief Executive Officer of Hamburg Süd, said: “Sustainability is an indispensable component of the corporate philosophy of Hamburg Süd, and good assessments by independent experts spur us on even more. Our commitment is paying off in several ways: for the environment and Hamburg Süd – and, above all, for our customers. They can count on us to meet very high standards, thereby contributing to sustainably shaping their entire supply chain.”

Above average marks for Hamburg Süd

CDP collects and publishes environmental data about companies and cities worldwide. Special attention is paid to emissions management; Hamburg Süd has voluntarily reported its CO2 emissions to the non-profit organization for several years, which was rated above average. The company also scored a “B” grade for its overall performance. Hamburg Süd is now two whole grades above average not only in the Water Transportation industry group, but also in CDP’s Supply Chain programme and in the group of companies from the German-speaking region.

Top marks in cross-industry comparison

Independent experts at EcoVadis, which issues CSR ratings of suppliers for global supply chains, awarded Hamburg Süd its “Gold” status rating. The company was also able to improve slightly within this top rating based on individual assessments in the categories Environment, Fair Business Practices, Labour Practices & Human Rights and Sustainable Procurement. In the Sea and Coastal Water Transportation industry sector, Hamburg Süd earned above-average marks in all four categories and scored particularly well in the “Environment” category. Hamburg Süd also placed very high in the cross-industry comparison and counted among the top 2 per cent of all companies rated by EcoVadis.
