Hamburg's University of Technology (TUHH) to host first maritime night

TUHH to highlight city's key role in maritime economy - over 60 keynote speeches and workshops scheduled

The University of Technology in Hamburg (TUHH) is to host the first “Maritime Night” on September 30, 2016. TUHH will highlight Hamburg’s pivotal role as a maritime business location in over 60 keynote speeches, workshops and tours of institutes and laboratories, experiments and exhibitions. The event is targeting all those interested in shipbuilding, shipping, offshore, port, technology and the seas.

Exchange with experts from shipping, technology and business

More than 40 speakers from all over Germany will talk about huge waves, accidents on the high seas and trying to park 200,000 ton ships and give insight into shipping and maritime issues. Visitors can also obtain information about institutes and firms at many stands. A course in sailor knots, ship simulator demonstrations and how to build a raft are just some of the exciting highlights for young people. Several experiments can be tried out and many laboratories viewed as well.

Prof. Wolfgang Mackens, who is organising the event, said: “We are looking forward to an exciting event with many visitors and close interaction with experts from shipping, commerce and technology. The “Maritime Night” is being held by the TUHH Institute for Mathematics and the DLR_School_Lab with the Faszination Technik Klub for children and youths in Hamburg.

Seat of maritime educational and research institutes

The maritime economy is one of the most important economic and employment sectors in Hamburg and the metropolitan region. It comprises shipbuilding, suppliers for shipbuilding, steel and metal construction, electrics and electronic engineering, plant engineering, navigation technology, environmental technology, offshore industry, marine technology and other service sectors. The city is also the seat of well-known maritime educational and research institutes and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea making the Hamburg Metropolitan Region one of the main centres of Europe’s maritime economy.
