Hamburg welcomed the 800,000th cruise passenger Saturday (December 16, 2017), a press release said. The winner, Briton Mr. Milford and his partner Mrs. Starkey-Nesling, received an early Christmas surprise on disembarking at the Cruise Terminal Steinwerder. Mr. Milford had disembarked from the Columbus to spend an enjoyable afternoon in Hamburg. A shanty choir and a festive welcome committee welcomed the delighted couple. Sacha Rougier, Managing Director of Cruise Gate Hamburg GmbH, Matthias Rieger, Managing Director of Hamburg Cruise Net e.V., and Allwyn Furtado, Hotel Director, Cruise and Maritime Voyages congratulated him and presented a Hamburg explorer package.
“This is the fifteenth time that we travel with Cruise & Maritime and we’ve never experienced anything like this. What a wonderful surprise! I am very happy about the prize,” said Mr. Milford The explorer package, sponsored by the partners of Hamburg Cruise Center, included one overnight stay at Atlantic Kempinski Hamburg, a city sightseeing tour, admission to the Miniature Wonderland and the prototype car museum, a guided tour of Airbus and a HamburgCard. The HHLA shanty choir, De Jungs vun de Logerhus, sang Hamburg-themed songs to celebrate.
Lap of honour in front of Elbphilharmonie
The cruise liner bade farewell to Hamburg with a “lap of honour” in front of the Elbphilharmonie and to celebrate the 800,000th passenger. Rieger noted: “It is important to Hamburg that its visitors feel welcome and have a memorable stay. With the support of Hamburg Cruise Net, we were able to mark the occasion with a prize for the 800,000th passenger. We hope he will always have fond memories of his stay in Hamburg.” The Columbus is scheduled to return to the Port of Hamburg three times in 2018.
