Cunard Line’s “Queen Elizabeth” will ring in the 2017 cruise ship season in Hamburg when it arrives in Altona at 7 am on January 5. This year, Hamburg is heading for record numbers with around 800,000 expected passengers. The many highlights include the port anniversary celebrations and the Hamburg Cruise Days as well as the launch of huge liners like Norwegian Jade, Mein Schiff 6, and Independence of the Seas, MSC Preziosa and Silver Wind. Another highlight is the launch of “Mein Schiff 6” on June 1, 2017.
Maiden voyage to Kiel
“Mein Schiff 6” will head to Kiel on its maiden voyage and arrive in the port on June 3, 2017. Then it will sail the Baltic Sea and dock in the the Baltic states and the Norwegian county of Nordland until mid August 2017. “Mein Schiff 6” will then set sail from Hamburg to New York and cross the United States from September. From Bayonne, New York, “Mein Schiff 6” will sail two different routes lasting ten days and eleven days each. From mid November, it will tour Central America.
Over 1 million visitors expected
This year, several other passenger ships will be making first port of calls to Hamburg where they are likely to be greeted by many enthusiastic onlookers. The MSC Preziosa in the MSC Cruises fleet is expected on May 3 in the Cruise Centre Steinwerder. The port anniversary celebrations from May 5-7, 2017 are likely to draw well over 1 million visitors with many traditional sailing ships, museum ships, merchant and cruise ships as well as motor boats and yachts.
Independence of the Seas to make first port of call
The Norwegian Jade will make its first port of call to Hamburg on June 13 and is expected at 8 am in the Cruise Centre Altona. The vessel in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet is scheduled to pay another six visits to Hamburg by September. The arrival of the Independence of the Seas on July 12 will be another highpoint this year. The ship has already replaced the Queen Mary 2 as the world’s biggest ship and has five cabin categories. The vessel also sports cabins with balconies overlooking the seas and has vistas of the promenade and interior cabins.
Chilehaus to join “Blue Port”
Silver Wind, a vessel in the Monaco-based Silversea Cruises fleet, will set sail for Hamburg and arrive in the Überseebrücke terminal in time for the Cruise Days on September 7. Around 600,000 visitors are expected at the Cruise Days from September 8-10, 2017. Guest vessels include the AIDAprima, Mein Schiff 3, Albatros and Norwegian Jade. The Cruise Days will be held against the backdrop of a light show named “Blue Port” which will turn the port of Hamburg blue from September 4-13, 2017. The famous Chilehaus, parts of Speicherstadt and the Gr0ßmarkt and Burchardkai will also be lit up in blue colours.
