China confirms itself as the port's most important trade partner

Positive signals from "transport logistic China" - Chinese partners showed great interest on Hamburg's smartPORT project

The People’s Republic of China is the most important trade partner of the Port of Hamburg. Nearly 30 per cent of all containers handled in Germany’s largest universal ports come from China or are destined of the Chinese market. Last year, container handling for the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong reached 705,000 TEU in the first quarter, and thus grew by 10.5 per cent, says Hafen Hamburg Marketing. The growth was mainly driven by the export of loaded containers.

Positive resonances at the industry fair at Shanghai

The port of Hamburg ist the most important European port for the Chinese market. This was also the impression taken back home by trade fair visitors and exhibitor who participated at “transport logistic China“ from 17-19 June. The excellent connections to the European hinterland, particularly to Central and Eastern Europe, have been particularly praised by Chinese professional audience, says the Port of Hamburg Marketing e.V. The international trade fair for logistics, mobility, IT and supply chain management is one of the most important logistics events in Asia.

Great interest in smartPort project

“As the Port of Hamburg, we have been participing as exhibitor at “transport logistic China“ from its very first launch, i.e. now in the sixth year. This year, members from our association participating at the Port of Hamburg’s stand include the Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG, Maritime Cargo Logistics GmbH, Saco Shipping GmbH, TCO Transcargo GmbH, and Brunsbüttel Ports GmbH“, says Axel Mattern, CEO of Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V. In addition, also the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) used the opportunity to discuss new technologies and trends with the international transportation industry in China.

HPA-Chef Jens Meier summarises: “Our Chinese partners showed a particularly great interest in future-oriented topics such as our smartPORT project. It involves an advanced and intelligent networking of the port, a more efficient management and an improved use of existing infrastructure, with sustainable aspects being a key focus.
