Twitter moves to Hamburg

US online social networking and microblogging service from San Francisco with new office at HafenCity.

First, rumor had it. Now, it’s official: Twitter is about to open a new branch in Hamburg. The new sales office in Hamburg will complement Twitter’s activities on the German speaking market directed from its Berlin headquarters. Insiders, however, see it as a first steps of leaving the capital. “In Hamburg, we have the major media companies, major customers, Germany’s most creative agencies and large online companies, but also innovative start-ups. Hamburg is the right environment to build a great team”, the leading national weekly “Die Zeit” recently cited Twitter’s new CEO for Germany, Thomas de Buhr, in its online edition. The Senate of Hamburg had also shown great commitment.

HQ in Berlin, sales in Hamburg

Twitter will take up new premises in the bustling atmosphere of Hamburg’s new waterfront district of HafenCity. Hamburg’s First Mayor Olaf Scholz rejoiced: “Twitte opted for an office in Hamburg, and thus followed in the footsteps other global platforms like Facebook, Google, LinkedIn or Jimdo, which are already part of a vibrant digital scene. This also shows that those responsible for the decision regard Hamburg as a place where you can turn corporate activities into an economic success. We are very happy about this assessment”, “Scholz told the daily paper “Hamburger Abendblatt”.

Good neighbours

The IT and media sector is highly specialised and multi-faceted in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Hamburg is the traditional German capital of newspaper publishing and home to Germany’s leading TV news journals “Tagesschau” and “Tagesthemen”, the country’s creative advertising metropolis, Germany’s number one of the booming games sector, and a stronghold of film making. From telecommunications to IT, media and advertising: with more than 110,000 employees working in over 23,000 companies Hamburg is one of the most important locations in Europe of creative industries and related technologies.

Dynamic social media scene

Next to established media companies, a dynamic social media scene also evolved in Hamburg. From app programmers to javascript designers- specialisation in professions linked to digital platforms continues to grow within the industry.
