Spice VR wins Webfuture Award 2016 with Spherie

Breakthrough in next.Media.Hamburg's contest for founders. Win comes hot on heels of pitch at SXSW 2016 in Texas

SpiceVR’s “Spherie” drone has triumphed at this year’s Webfuture Award and fought off stiff competition from nine other finalists. Nicolas Chibac accepted the prize for SpiceVR Wednesday in betahaus during a ceremony attended by 150 guests. “Spherie” combines modern, virtual reality and drone technology to create the illusion of genuine footage of moving situations and static environments. The drone can deliver 3D data and 360 degree film footage and create hitherto unseen VR experiences.

In March, SpiceVR pitced at the international South by Southwest (SXSW) creative fair in Austin, Texas. A total of 40 entries had been submitted for the ninth edition of the Webfuture Award for outstanding start-ups in Hamburg’s digital economy.

Fashion Cloud and AdTriba among finalists

Commenting on the competition, Chibac said: “It was particularly exciting to have to hold ten pitches in a short space of time as part of the speed-dating business idea. We have never done anything like that before,” adding, “The other entrants and members of the jury were top-class and included a colourful mix – from investors to big publishers.” SpiceVR was one of three start-ups to win a “Webfuture Wildcard” in an online vote and eventually a place in the final.

SpiceVR’s live pitch won over the jury and was followed by Fashion Cloud in second place with a platform for exchanging digital content in fashion. AdTriba came third with its cross-channel marketing tool for advertisers.

Wildcard for betapitch

On May 25th, the ten finalists presented their business models in five-minute “Business-Idea Speed-Dating” sessions to the jury. The chair of the jury, Dr. Heiko Milde, of IFB Innovationsstarter, enthused about the level of the entries, and noted: “I think we have a high quality of submissions from a broad range of web, mobile or digitally-orientated business ideas.”

SpiceVR receives a cash prize of EUR 5,000, a consultation voucher from KMPG and a year’s workspace in betahaus, financed by Airbnb, a partner of the award. The start-up has also qualified for the international betapitch competition in betahaus on June 23.
