To be or not to be, that’s not the question. But to participate in Hamburg’s annuale Theatre Night on 13 September, which once again will give audiences a whirlwind tour of the world of drama and performance. With a programme featuring 300 events in 42 venues, this is a special night to remember. And Hamburg is the city with one of the most dynamic and diverse theatre scenes in Germany.
A diverse kaleidoscope
On Hamburg Theatre Night, the actors take over the city. Theatres, foyers, bars and even the streets of the city-state become stages for drama, tragedy, and comedy, for singing, dancing and the spoken word. With the Theatre Night ticket, admission to all the performances is free of charge – which means you’ll be zig-zagging the city throughout the evening for cutting-edge theatre, opera, ballet and comedy in more than 50 bus shuttles. From “ Engelsaal” to Imperial Theater, from Winterhuder Fährhaus to Kampnagel, or from Delphi Showpalast to Thalia Theater: from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., 42 stages will showcase the best of current and upcoming productions.
Following extensive modernisation, also the Altonaer Theater and the Deutsche Schauspielhaus are back on the agenda. This year’s special venues are the star hall of the Hamburg observator, the OFF-box of the Grünspan music club at Große Freiheit and the floating theatres of “Das Schiff” and MS Cap San Diego. The grand final party of Hamburg’s eleventh theatre night will be hosted by Ohnsorg-Theater.
Behind the scenes
The Hamburg Theatre Night also offers to visitors the chance to look behind the scene and gain hands-on insights into the works and secrets of theatrical productions. At the Ernst Deutsch Theater, you will be able to witness director Wolf-Dietrich Sprenger and its ensemble preparing the production of “Today, I’m blonde” iAt Deutsches Schauspielhaus, a raffle and costume auctions complement the programme of stage.
