The jury – Roger Cicero (musician), Stefan Gerdes (NDR), Tina Heine (Elbjazz), Stefan Hentz (freelance journalist), Hans Hielscher (Der Spiegel) und Mücke Quinckhardt (Jazzbüro Hamburg) – will be recognising Gille for his outstanding artistic achievements and commitment to the jazz scene in Hamburg.
Jazz Traditionalist & Sound Researcher
“Sebastian Gille“, says jury member Stefan Gerdes, “is one of the most important voices of today’s jazz in Hamburg. Only 32 years young, Gille, however, has already reached an amazing musical maturity as composer and soloist. He has an excellent technique, a highly individual, distinctive tone, and has created many original and contemporary compositions.” Stefan Hentz adds: “While being deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, Gille expands it with the curiosity of a sound researcher.”
For the realisation of his musical vision, the saxophonist succeeded to win allies, which are among the best in the German and international scene. For the Jazz series “Gille’s Art”, Gille teamed up with a congenial counterpart, the American drummer Jim Black. With his national quartet, comprising Pablo Held, Robert Landfermann and Jonas Burgwinkel, Gille creates music that “does not look for quick effect, but for fine texture and deeper meanings of life”, as he puts it himself. Equipped with musical curiosity and great potential, Gille enjoys to be inspired and surprised by other musicians when embarking on yet another jazzy musical discovery tour.
h2. Ambassador Of The Hamburg Jazz Scene
The NDR Big Band in Hamburg regularly engages Gille as a saxophonist for concerts, radio broadcasts, and CD productions. The British composer Michael Gibbs even wrote specifically a concert programme performed by NDR Bigband in honour of Gille. Outside of Hamburg, Gille is one of those musicians perceived as representatives of contemporary jazz in Hamburg, and thus an icon of Hamburg jazz scene, in which he is highly involved. When the “Jazz Federation Hamburg eV” was newly formed and began looking for a new venue for jazz after the closure of “Birdland,” Gille took over the board responsibility and helped with its contacts and ideas to shape the project and to ensure its artistic quality. Enabling fellow musicians to perform, he stayed on the ground, and actively campaigned for the association at the information desk.
