Founder of Fox & Sheep GmbH wins scoop award 2016

300 journalists, innovators and programmers to discuss latest media innovations during scoopcamp in Hamburg

Verena Pausder, winner of the 2016 scoop award, is keen on acquainting children and youths with digital life. The founder of Fox & Sheep GmbH has been developing apps for pre-school children since 2012. And in 2016, she and the Haba toymaker launched a digital workshop allowing children to experiment with 3D printers and try their hand at coding. The prize for the media entrepreneur, who combines journalistic business ideas with digital technologies, will be presented on September 29th by Meinolf Ellers, dpa’s Chief Digital Officer, in Hamburg’s Kehrwieder Theatre. scoopcamp is being hosted by nextMedia.Hamburg and dpa news agency.

Over 15 million downloads of learning and entertainment apps

Commenting on the winner, Ellers said: “A passion for content, technical competence and corporate activity are the prerequisites for success on the digital media market. The winner of this year’s scoop awards, Verena Pausder, combines these traits in an exemplary manner.” Remarking on her Berlin-based company, Fox & Sheep, Pausder who hails from Hamburg and is the mother of two children, said: “At some point, I noticed that digitalisation is leaving its mark on our children.” This prompted her to found the company and now her learning and entertainment apps such as “Schlaf gut (Sleep well), “Streichelzoo” (Petting Zoo) and “Kleine Bauarbeiter” (Little Builder) feature quality content for small children without hidden costs and have led to over 15 million downloads.

Contribution to developing media content

In reference to this year’s winner, who is also one of two Germans named Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, Dr. Carsten Brosda, State Councillor for Culture, Media and Digital Affairs, said: “Linking content, programmes and products for children and youths is a key factor in the future media sector as they make an important contribution to developing media skills,” said. Former winners include Kurt Herman (Storify) and Marten Blankensteijn.

Keynote speakers from Washington Post and Playbuzz

Eva-Maria Lemke, of ZDF heute+ will moderate discussions on the latest innovations in media by journalists, innovators and programmers. Topics such as the traits of modern journalism, monetising content and how brands will become media as well as issues facing media-makers in the 21st century to supply users with top-quality stories will be high on the agenda. Keynote speakers include Jeremy Gilbert, Director of Strategic Initiatives at Washington Post, Assaf Sagy, Vice President International Markets at Playbuzz, and Verena Pausder, co-founder and Managing Director of Fox & Sheep GmbH.

Workshops & hackathon

The opening session will be followed by workshops on data journalism, investigative reporting, immersive storytelling, social media and product innovations with Isa Sonnenfeld, Head of Google News Labs DACH, Martin Viertel, from dpa Newslab and Niddal Salah-Eldin, Head of Social Media at WELT, among others. The conference will conclude with a discussing entitled “Conditions for Media Start-ups/Bedingungen von Medienstartups” with Richard Gutjahr and guests such as Dirk Zeiler, CEO of next media accelerator, and Sigrun Albert, Managing Director of Digital at Mediengruppe Oberfranken. Two days prior to the conference, a hackathon will give an introduction to developing a concept and design thinking. The results of this programming marathon will be presented live on stage during scoopcamp.
