Mein Schiff 4 – Hamburg's Floating Concert Hall

The Klanghaus of Mein Schiff 4 is the first concert hall at sea - and venue of the Second Music Fest Hall in May

Cruise meets classic: On 15 May 15, 2016 , the Philharmonic chamber music hall of Mein Schiff 4 will welcome prominent musical guests. On Pentecost Sunday, the floating concert hall will delight audiences of the second “International Music Festival Hamburg” with a concert of the vocal ensemble “Wishful Singing”. The five superbe vocalists from the Netherlands will fascinate their audiences with tunes from Ligeti to Kodály, but also with traditional Nordic folk music and hits and evergreens of the Beatles and the Andrew Sisters.

Exciting Premiere of the Music Festival

The co-operation of TUI Cruises, the Hamburg Musik gGmbH as operators Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle, and the Hamburg Tourism Board (HHT) will make this special concert a highlight of the 2016 music festival. “For the first time, the International Music Festival Hamburg will be leaving behind the mainland and venture to the concert planks of a cruise ship”, said Dr. Thomas Schmidt-Ott, Director of Culture and Entertainment at TUI Cruises. “We are excited about this opportunity offered at our home port. Now, we will also be connected to Hamburg artistically. 2016’s festival theme “Freedom” perfectly befits cruise. Through its commitment, HHT promotes closer interaction between Hamburg’s cultural institutions and tourism industry. “Culture needs to arrive at the heart of touristic offers”, says Dietrich von Albedyll, managing director of HHT.

Great Potential: Cruise + Culture

According to a 2014 market research study by HHT, the merger of cruise and culture has huge potential. Around 20 per cent of cruise passengers who are planning a pre- or post-cruise programme in Hamburg use the cultural offers of the city. A visit to the theatre, opera, or concert, often serve as justification for an extended stay. “We want to contribute to addressing an interested public, even though culture may not have been the main motive of the trip, but is an important activity during the stay”, von Albedyll continued.

Floating Concert Hall

The venue of the unique concert experience is the so-called “Klanghaus” (sound house) aboard Mein Schiff 4. S TUI Cruises are the only shipping line to offer a philharmonic hall of such a world-class standard aboard a cruise ship – A similar concert hall can also be found at TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 3. Set in the hall, that can accommodate around 200 guests, a specially designed sound system allows to simulate true-to sound illusion. “To host the concert of Wishful Singing with such prestigious partners such as Hamburg Musik gGmbH and the Hamburg Tourism Board underlines the high quality and class of the programme we offer at our Klanghaus”, said Thomas Schmidt-Ott. “I hope that the concert marks the start of a series of exciting collaborations.”
