The Hamburg-based internet company Jimdo announced Monday five finalists from over 3,000 entries in its so-called founders’ slam. The contest encourages candidates with a business idea to take the next step towards self-employment. The winner receives EUR 1,000 per month for a year. And coaches will also be on hand to assist them with their ventures. Commenting on the unexpected run, Fridtjof Detzner, co-founder of Jimdo, said: “We are delighted to be able to help five finalists with words and deeds.” He and his co-founder Christian Springub will coach the finalists with Frank Thelen, a well-known investor who appears on VOX TV’s “The Lion’s Den” series for start-ups.
Party dips and antique furniture for children
“The number of entries and the quality of the submitted projects is enormous,” said Thelen whose company e42 has invested in start-ups for years. The five finalists include Barlu Parts 3D that makes prosthesis with 3D printers, as well as beofix that makes environment-friendly beeswax covers as an alternative to tinfoil. The “Food Buddys“ and their tasty sauces for barbecues reached the final, as well as Roomoon who produce children’s furniture and toys from both antique and new wood. The Refoodgees project, which hires refugees as cooks for catering events; food trucks, festivals or dinners, are also among the delighted finalists.
Coaching by Sibilla Kawala, founder of Limberry
The finalists will meet five coaches namely Thelen, the two founders of Jimdo as well as Sibilla Kawala, founder of the Limberry design label and Sanja Stankovic, co-founder of Hamburg Startups and Digital Media Women. The guest coaches include Doreen Hotze, Manager of the Chamber of Commerce’s Centre for Founders in Hamburg, Veronica Reichboth, Project Manager of the start hub at nextMedia.Hamburg, and Elke Jacob, Consultant and Head of Marketing & PR at FCB Hamburg, who will host a workshop from June 30-July 2, 2017.
Advice service and access to networks
The winner will be selected after a live pitch on July 1, in an online vote and announced on July 14, 2017. Partners and coaches of the slam will be on hand to advise start-ups during the start-up phase and help them expand their networks.
