New children's hospital at UKE to open in 100 days

New hospital be named Werner and Michael Otto University Children's Hospital - opening on September 14

Final preparations are underway to open the new children’s hospital called the “Werner and Michael Otto University Children’s Hospital” at UKE on September 14, 2017, a press release said Friday. Prof. Dr. Burkhard Göke, Medical Director and Chair of UKE, said: “We wish to honour decades of commitment to UKE by Werner and Dr. Michael Otto. We wish to improve the long-term health of children and youths in our city and beyond with the new hospital. The Werner and Michael Otto University Children’s Hospital provides the ideal framework conditions for forward-looking, state-of-the-art medicine suitable for children.”

Only oncological children’s hospital in Hamburg Metropolitan Region

The new hospital is to become a model in the care of children and youths in north Germany. It will pave the way for state-of-art medicine to care for children with cancer, severe neurological and rare congenital diseases and heart diseases as well as children who require liver, kidney or bone marrow transplants. The new hospital will be the only oncological children’s hospital of its kind in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region.

“Children with severe and chronic diseases require both excellent medical care and a warm, uplifting environment. The children’s UKE stands for state-of-the art medicine and will have interlinked wards, short paths and complementary therapy procedures,” said Prof. Dr. Ania C. Muntau, Director of UKE’s Hospital for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

Run to benefit sick children at UKE

The new hospital costs EUR 69.5 million a third of which has been raised from donations. Another EUR 2.5 million are needed to meet the target of EUR 23.5 million. A third run to benefit sick children at UKE will take place on July 15, 2017. All the monies raised will be donated to the new hospital.
