To strengthen the reputation and expertise of Hamburg as a leading location of cancer combat, the University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCCH) at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to promote the “Fighting Cancer Center Hamburg” on a national and international level. Thus, increased collaboration between industry and clinics plus additional investments are planed to strengthen Hamburg’s assets in fighting cancer.
„The Hamburg research and treatment centres and companies in the healthcare industry all highly contribute to improving the chances of curing cancer. With our joint initiative, we want to bundle these competences”, said Fritz Horst Melsheimer, president of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, at the kick-off event of the initiative on Thursday, attended by 50 players of the sector.
Competence Network Of The Hamburg Metropolitan Region
Melsheimer invites companies, research facilities, and clinic to join the initiative. „Networking with other partners involved in research or treatments is a key objective of the University Cancer Center Hamburg“, confirms Prof Dr med. Carsten Bokemeyer, director of UCCH und Vice-Präsident of Hamburg’s Cancer Society. UCCH thus formed a network of competence with research, diagnostic, and treatment services from the Hamburg Metropolitan Region.

Member of the new network also include research and scientifif facilities from other sectors, including the radiation centre Hamburg, Philips, and the Hamburg-based biotechnology specialist Indivumed GmbH. “I am very pleased to participate in this Hamburger initiative as only by the combined expertise of all participants in cancer treatments, an improvement in the fight against cancer can be achieved in the foreseeable future”, says Prof Dr Hartmut Juhl, founder and CEO of Indivumed. Indivumed is closely co-operating with clinics and oncologists to create optimal conditions for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to fight cancer.
The Hamburg merchants support the initiative by their “Hamburg 2030” programme, which has determined the “Fighting Cancer Center” as one of its lighthouse projects.
