The Life Science Nord has been awarded the gold label “Cluster Organisation Management Excellence Label GOLD – Proven for Cluster Excellence” from the European Cluster Excellence Initiative (ECEI). Last year, the cluster management agency underwent an extensive audit by the classification committee.
Speaking during Life Science Nord’s New Year reception at the Lübeck Fraunhofer Establishment for Marine Biotechnology (EMB), Dr. Hinrich Hobeck, Managing Director of Life Science Nord Management GmbH, said: “The gold label award is confirmation that we are on the right path.” He added: “Now, we are proud to be one of only eight recipients of the European Life Science network’s gold label.”
Life Science Nord pooling positions and creating networks
Under the Life Science Nord label, the cluster agency Life Science Nord Management GmbH and the same-named development association all aim to augment the region and turn it into an international leading life science network. To do so, 200 companies and institutions have set up the association Life Science Nord e.V.
Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein take part
The association pools positions in biomedical sciences, medical technology, biotechnology and the pharmaceutical sectors, initiates strategic projects and supports the development of companies, science and institutions focusing on innovative medicine. It forms a network between commerce, science and politics in the north and contributes expertise and knowledge from research centres as well as contacts to companies. The states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein have a 40 per cent share in the agency.
Politicians praise cluster management
The reception was attended by political representatives from Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, who in 2004 joined forces to boost the Life Science sector in north Germany. Dr. Frank Nägele, state ministry of economic affairs, congratulated Life Science Nord on the award. “The past 11 years in the cluster management’s existence have shown that the decision by both states on a joint Life Science Cluster continues to bear fruit.”
